We are happy to have contributed 18 backpacks to the Holston Conference Backpack Collection for Ishe Anesu in Mutare, Zimbabwe!
Ishe Anesu is an after-school project designed to provide education to the underprivileged children, orphans, and the poorest of the poor. In order to achieve this objective, the project pays school fees and buys school uniforms, books, and stationery for the children.
The Hope Sunday School class sponsors an annual coat drive for the children at Lonsdale Elementary School, as well as for children in some of the schools in surrounding communities. Each year the class delivers approximately 80-100 coats to four schools in the area.
Boy Scout Troop 2 is sponsored by the United Methodist Men at Lonsdale UMC and has been changing the lives of the boys in the troop since 2001. The troop is led by John Beckner and Alan Mays, and has boys in it from Lonsdale and surrounding communities. Over the years, approximately 50 boys have been in the troop, with new Scouts joining the troop each year. Under the leadership of Diana Beckner and Vicki Daugherty, the troop added a Cub Scout pack in 2010. The Cub and Boy Scouts meet every Thursday night at 6:30.
The food pantry at Lonsdale UMC has been in operation since the 1990s. It is operated by church volunteers and its supplies come solely from donations made by the church congregation. The food pantry provides food supplies throughout the year and gives special meal items to families at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is open to families in the Lonsdale community, and currently serves approximately 25 families (a total of about 110 people) yearly. The food pantry is open the third Thursday of each month from 1 pm to 3 pm.
